About Robert McConnell – Vallejo’s Next Mayor

  • Voted against placing on the ballot Measure G for raising the local sales tax to the highest level in the Bay Area, 9.125%.
  • Succeeded in helping small businesses by advocating for outdoor dining.
  • Voted for and is in full support of the new homeless navigation center which encourages stability for the unsheltered.
  • Prior to the recent police shootings: Robert fought for restructuring and redevelopment of the Vallejo Police Department.
  • In 2011, he advocated for a Citizens’ Review Board to analyze the Vallejo Police Department
  • Recommended a review of VPD by the California Department of Justice to improve general police practices.
  • He was the lone vote on the City Council to support random drug testing of the police, and testing after a police involved shooting.
  • Voted against moving the police to the waterfront at 400 Mare Island Way, because of the price of 14 million dollars and the positioning in a potential flood plain, with upwards of $50 million spent just to retrofit.
  • Advocated for state licensing of Law Enforcement, similar to other professions such as nurses, doctors, hairdressers, and manicurists.
  • Encouraged citizens to file complaints who felt wronged by the Vallejo Police Department in order to ensure accountability in all aspects of government.
  • Advocated for the investigation of officer shootings by outside independent agencies.
  • Advocated for more reasonable safety union compensation instead of the higher rates paid by cities served by Bart.
  • Advocated for homeless, substance abuse, and mental health counseling.
Vallejo’s economy is still suffering. It needs to use its limited budget wisely. There needs to be a tremendous effort to redirect funds into different departments and manage spending.
  • Accountability in government.
  • All people who wish to speak to Council to be fully heard.
  • To fight racism and discrimination so that all of our residents have a fair chance at realizing their potential.
  • Gradually increase our financial reserves to at least six months of our current general fund annual expenditure to ensure prudent financial planning.
  • Increase “Buy Local” efforts through promotion, so that Vallejo receives the benefits of the sales tax already in place.
  • To use the city’s limited budget wisely and live within our means.
  • To use a commercial vacant property registration ordinance to help maintain our empty commercial properties.
  • To clean up the illegal dumping and garbage in our city.
  • To encourage strong economic development by streamlining the permitting process with lower fees to allow small business to thrive.
  • To have a police force that is more responsive to the needs of the people and more accountable for police conduct.
  • Sabbatical leave for VPD officers who show signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
  • Improved policing through community policing with trained professionals who are not sworn officers
  • Degree in Public Administration
  • Law Review: Placed in top one third of his graduating class at McGeorge School of Law
  • Clerked for a Federal Judge in the Federal Court of San Francisco
  • Worked at the California State Personnel Board as Executive Coordinator for Interns
  • Served 8 years on the Vallejo City Planning Commission with one year as President
  • Active practice in small business and personal finance law
