Robert McConnell for Vallejo Mayor 2020

VALLEJO – Current Vallejo Mayor Bob Sampayan has announced he is endorsing Vallejo City Councilperson Robert McConnell in his bid to become the next Mayor of Vallejo.

Mayor Sampayan released his official endorsement today:

“Robert, I am endorsing you for Vallejo Mayor 2020. I support Robert because he is fiscally prudent, is supportive of all people, has no special interest groups, is progressive, and understands Vallejo politics.  He also has many years of experience as a Planning Commissioner and City Council member.  He would be the right fit as mayor.”

“I love Vallejo,” Mr. McConnell said.  “But we are facing extremely challenging times which will require experience and knowledge.  Our city is approaching financial rapids that may become tremendously difficult to navigate.  As Mayor, I’ll bring focus, discipline, and accountability.”

A Focus on Quality of Life

McConnell believes more should be done to improve the quality of life within our city.  “We need to find a better way to fix our streets, to clean up our parks, to attract more shoppers to downtown,” said McConnell.

McConnell supports Vallejo’s youth programs.  And, as a councilmember, McConnell has consistently voted to support the arts in Vallejo.  “Vallejo is a beautiful place full of citizens eager to show their pride in the city they call home,” said McConnell.  “I look forward to the day when Vallejo gets only good press!”

Improving Our Police Department

McConnell has long been an advocate for redirection within the Vallejo Police Department and improved financial spending and budget alliances.

As a councilmember, McConnell has pushed for drug testing of officers, the creation of a citizens review program, and a new police department headquarters in a location other than Vallejo’s waterfront.

“Public safety needs to be the primary focus of our police department,” said McConnell.  “We need to develop programs that enable our police department to be more receptive to change.  I am interested in helping all people of Vallejo, not a few choice groups or a chosen few. We are all in this together and together this can be done,” McConnell added.

Robert McConnell — a History of Service

A native of California and a decorated Army ground combat veteran, McConnell has served two terms on the Vallejo City Council and is a former Planning Commission member.  McConnell also serves as the Vice-Chair of SolTrans and the Vice-Chair of the Napa-Vallejo Solid Waste Management Board. In addition, he is the alternate for the Solano County Water Agency.

McConnell has a B.A. degree in Public Administration, a Master’s Degree study in Public Administration from San Jose State University, and a law degree from McGeorge School of Law where he was on Law Review and worked at the California State Personnel Board.  McConnell has vast experience as a Law Clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco.

McConnell practiced business commercial litigation and personal injury law in San Francisco for several years before and after moving to Vallejo and establishing his own business on Georgia Street.

He is an avid rose gardener, a member of the NAACP, a life member of the local VFW, and has been an active volunteer at Vallejo’s Mira Theatre Guild.  McConnell has been married for over thirty years. He and his wife have rescued many stray, elderly, and abandoned animals over many years.
